Empowered people and an enabling working environment are crucial factors that determine the success of our Programs and promote excellence in sports, health, youth and leadership work. The right leadership, with the right support and knowledge, is the number one catalyst for the success of any Special Olympics Program.

Athlete leadership is integrated into Program Leadership training to ensure athlete leaders are embraced and provided meaningful roles. A Unified leadership approach has been integrated into program delivery and development of all leaders. The aim is to cultivate and support the growth of diverse leaders at all levels by providing ongoing, graduated learning opportunities that further professional development and performance.
The Special Olympics Leadership Academy, established in 2014, is an award-winning program dedicated to developing inclusive and future-ready leaders of the Special Olympics Movement. With a focus on developing inclusive mindsets, providing skillsets, and practical tools, the Academy aims to build capacity and strengthen leaders’ abilities to achieve inclusion globally.
