Grand Finale!


Special Olympics world games are held every two years alternating between summer and winter across different global locations. Every day and all around the world, our athletes train and strive to achieve their very best. During the World Games, the entire Special Olympics movement comes together to see our athletes in action and celebrate their victories over huge odds. No other event in the world has the social and emotional impact of the Special Olympics World Games. For the athletes and their families, the experience opens doors to un-imagined possibilities. For volunteers, coaches, and other supporters from all parts of the world, the Games inspire hope and belief in a brighter future of global acceptance, understanding, and unity.

Between 1987 & 2023, 1456 Athletes & Unified partners from India have participated in 10 World Summer and 6 World Winter Games ,winning 520 Gold, 579 Silver and 602 Bronze Medals

The talent is explored and identified by the wide network of Special Schools , SSAs and the Coaches, right from the grassroot levels. The Athletes are trained and assessed and encouraged to participate at local, district and state levels before reaching the National level and then a selection is made for the World Games . A structured process is followed to enable a befitting representation at the International level. The Selection Policy which is complied, is enclosed here.

About the Contingent

Supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India, 193 Athletes and Unified Partners and 57 Coaches from India participated in 16 sports at the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Berlin Germany from 17 to 25 June 2023. While 3 AHODs assisted the Head of the Delegation, Dr DG Chaudhari, General Secretary, SO Bharat, 19 Additional staff supported the team and a medical expert, making 274 as the total strength of the delegation. Additionally, 10 delegates represented India at the youth congresses, 59 honoured guests and 7 media persons supported SO Bharat through their participation bringing the total from India to 350. Three days prior to the Opening ceremony held on 17 June, the Indian contingent enjoyed the warm hospitality of Frankfurt at the Host Town Program arranged in the city for SO Bharat with 9 days full of sports and emotions, the SO World Summer Games 2023 witnessed participation of 6500 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners from 176 delegations competing in 26 sports. The athletes were supported by more than 3,000 coaches, 9000 family members and 18,000 volunteers.

The Games were spread across eight venues located in and around Berlin. India’s total Medal Tally reached 199 including 77 Gold, 71 Silver and 51 Bronze. This was India’s 16 Special Olympics World Games and 10 Special Olympics World Summer Games participation since 1987.

Following four Preparatory Camps, supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, India geared to participate in 16 sports.

A Selection Committee was formed to facilitate fair selection of the Athletes.
