Our Philosophy

Sports

With over 15 lakh Athletes registered all over India, SO Bharat delivers trainings and competitions in 26 Olympic-type sports.  Special Olympics organizes sports and competitions at various levels- local, district, state, national and international and based on abilities and performance athletes cross each level to participate at higher consecutive levels. Special Olympics Bharat has a large pool of coaches and trainers that it draws on, for training Athletes. Coaches also undergo training to equip them to cater to our growing number of athletes as standalone coaches and trainers and as physical educators at local levels and special schools.

With the support of Sports Authority of India (SAI)/Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) under Annual Calendar for trainings & competitions (ACTC) the Athletes are trained at the National Coaching camps (NCC) enabling them to face international competitions. To train our coaches Advance Coaches Training Programs (ACTP) are organized all-round the year.

Health

Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® is a Special Olympics program that provides free health examinations in a fun, welcoming environment that removes the anxiety and trepidation people with intellectual disabilities often experience when faced with a visit to a medical professional. Our impact on the health and well-being of Special Olympics athletes around the world is great, in some cases saving lives by discovering unknown health issues or providing health care that otherwise would not be available. We not only serve these athletes but also (1) train health care professionals who return to their practices with increased knowledge and confidence about treating people with intellectual disabilities and (2) influence improvements in health care for people with intellectual disabilities at the policy and systemic level.

EXAMINATIONS ARE OFFERED IN 8 DIFFERENT HEALTH AREAS: Fit Feet (Podiatry) | FUNfitness (Physical Therapy) | Health Promotion (Prevention & Nutrition) | Healthy Hearing (Audiology) | Special Smiles (Dentistry)| Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Foundation Opening Eyes (Vision/Eye Health) | Strong Minds (Emotional Health) | Med-Fest (History & Physical Exam)

Youth & Education

Special Olympics Youth Activation endeavours to sensitize the youth in schools by creating opportunities of enhanced engagements with the Special Olympics Athletes , to develop an attitude of acceptance and build communities of Inclusion. The success of the program is rooted in seeding experiments among youth and flipping the power paradigm in instituting radical social change so youth with and without ID directly drive change.

The concept of Unified Sports resonates strongly with the National Education policy 2020 of India that makes Inclusion urgent. While reaching out to schools and colleges, we understand the power of the youth as agents of change. We endeavour to create several opportunities for the youth to engage and interact inclusively on and beyond the sports field, having the youth with IDD share equal space in everything from planning, execution and, participation. A meaningful intervention of the adults in schools, colleges and communities is critical , wherein they encourage and guide the youth , both, with and without Intellectual disabilities.
