Small wonder

When the Indian contingent to the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2013 met in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, not many would have thought that the young Anishka would return a double gold winner.

All of 12 years old, Anishka Upadhyay was one of the youngest of the 3,500 athletes who participated in the World Winter Games 2013 held in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Born into a humble household, Anishka was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder at a very young age.

It was when she was studying at a special school in Lucknow that she came across the Special Olympics Bharat. The youngster was soon training in a variety of sports, including roller skating and softball. She also started competing at the national level.

When the World Winter Games 2013 were announced, Anishka started training in alpine skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing. Her impressive performance in alpine skiing got her entry into the Indian team. She went on to bag two golds for her country in the alpine skiing event in PyeongChang.
