On 6 August 2019 , the NE Now News (Guwahati) covered an extraordinary story of a noble gesture made by a Special Athlete. Anyatam Rajkumar, SO Bharat Athlete from Assam, , from his various Cash awards received so far, donated Rs 5000 to the Chief Minister Relief’s Fund in order to help the flood affected people in the State of Assam.

Touched by this donation specifically, Mr Sarbananda Sonowal , Chief Minister of Assam personally expressed his gratitude to Anyatam, for being an inspirational sportsperson and a responsible citizen

Anyatam Rajkumar (18yrs), bagged India’s first gold in Aquatics 25 m breaststroke bringing Assam on the map at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 LA USA.   Having joined Special Olympics Bharat in 2010 he never shook focus from swimming with the strong support of his parents. After having participated at the Asia Pacific Regional Games in December 2013 he stepped up his regimen under close supervision of his Coach Abhijeet Tambe.  The path to this victory did not come easy. Every 15 days his father got him to Mumbai (from Assam)where his Coach was based, to design a regimen ideal for Anyatam. His Coach not only guided him during his visits to Pune for 15 days each time, but also drew out a strict time table to monitor his diet and his swimming practices dedicating 15 days to any one stroke.

Early in 2014, Anyatam stirred a near stampede situation in his school, as the students there had never met a person with Down’s syndrome before. Seeing him they all ran in a frenzy. Shocked himself at the incident Anyatam took a while to get over it.The situation was controlled later through the Special Olympics State program’s intervention. This also led to initiating a few activities like a skit etc. to bring about awareness at the school.

His accolades in Swimming are many. Apart from being the first Special Olympics National & International medalist swimmer of Assam, he is the first & the only medalist Sea swimmer of Assam and the only rower in India, with disabilities

Anyatam Rajkumar passed class 12th, CBSE Board Exam in 2019, from  the”South Point School” Guwahati, Assam. Anyatam’s main aim is to be a best Swimmer as well as Rower in the World and also to be a Government Officer. He is only child of Niru Dutta Rajkumari & Dweepen Rajkumar of Ambari (Near A.G.P. Office) Guwahati, Assam.

Dr. Anjana Goswami, Area Director, SOB Assam: Anyatam is always an inspiration for other Special Athletes. Instead of confining himself in Special Olympics only, he has also managed to compete on other sports with regular athletes. He has proved that given suitable opportunity our Special Athletes can always compete and excel with the regular athletes which paves the way for inclusion into the society.

It is heartening to see Anyatam on a forward mode, having circumvented tribulations that fell his way. Yes! Cheers to you Anyatam!!
